Nationally legalized in 1973, stillbirth has been one of the most multifaceted and controversial issues in American culture and politics today; competing groups fought to either modify or increase access to the procedure, leading to heated parameters among semipolitical activists, religious organizations, state legislatures, and judges (Williams, 2002). Pro-lifers and pro-choice members agree that abortion is necessary in cases that involve rape, incest, or when the health or life of the mother is threatened. In the case of rape or incest, forcing a woman made pregnant by this idle act would cause further psychological harm to the victim (Williams, 2002). If a woman cannot choose to terminate an unwanted pregnancy, she is denied the effective to the possession and control of her own body.
