Lying and fraudulence can have serious consequences in impartiality enforcement and tribunal proceedings. Thus, forensic psychologists have devoted much effort to growing methods and techniques for detecting lies. Unfortunately, research indicates that the majority of people, including those working in law enforcement, do not reach higher up chance levels in detecting prank when using intuition alone. For example, Ekman & OSullivan (1991) showed in two studies of law enforcement officials that many fail to reach above chance levels. On the other hand, other studies show that most lie catchers, such as psychological experts or the arcanum service, can perform with above chance accuracy in detecting deception (Ekman, OSullivan & Frank, 1999). The polygraph is the most widely used method of detecting deception and is based on psychophysiological measurements, which include electrodermal response, blood pressure, heart rate, and respiration.
