Microsoft: Competing on talent
Microsoft was established in 1975 by Bill gate and Paul Allen. In the summer of 1999, a front rapscallion article in WSJ brought attention to the increasing employee turnover in Microsoft due to grueling deadlines and bureaucracy. It was an issue taken very poorly by Gates and Steve Balmer, the companys then appointive president and COO. They very well understood the companys enormous success was largely due to its ability to recruit, motivate and retain extraordinary talent.
This case primarily deals with the work environment and the HR policies for recruiting and compensating the employees and the changes implemented by Microsoft over the 90s to control employee turnover.
Recruiting strategy
brightness was preferred over knowledge and experience was given little emphasis than ambition. This philosophy of Bill Gates existed even during the start-up days. financial policy at Microsoft involved not just property salaries but also equity acting as a motivator because the growth opportunities of the salaries held in equity were very high. Its sozzled control on headcount (n minus 1 philosophy) pull ahead reinforced pressure to merely settling for a just candidate. They wanted the best of the lot only.
The candidates selected for the interview had to go by means of an intense interview process designed by the incorruptible wherein they were interviewed by 3-10 Microsoft employees. The candidates who were able to submit through these interviews were finally interviewed by their prospective managers.
Work environment and employee development
Microsoft expected the programmers to work for 14 hours a day which made them very much participate to the caffeine culture. Microsoft gave importance to employee non-cash benefits like food, beverages, cafeterias etc. to shake them feel like home.
