In the play “A Streetcar Named Desire” Tennessee Williams, author, uses the theme of death and desire. The play revolves around the comp superstarnt part Blanche DuBois; therefore, the play concerns her directly. Blanche is viewed as an interesting character with a dissolute past. She used sex with strange men as a defense mechanism. She also lies continually to make her life advance more glamorous. She fears rushting too close to a man. Her reasons for see her sister Stella are very interesting. She comes bearing bad watchword. She brings news that their prestigious home that they grew up in has been lost. She neglects to say that one of the reasons that she was run out of her town was because of having sexual relations with a teenage student of hers. Blanche was an English teacher.
The play is set in New Orleans just after WWII when Truman was president. The economy is poor. Blanche is on her way to visit her sister Stella. Blanche has been asked to leave Belle Reve on neb of her behavior. She is considered a used older woman. Stella gives her directions on how to find her home. She is told to take off the train and board the trolley car named Desire, then beat to Cemeteries.
They told me to take a street-car named Desire, and then transfer to one called Cemeteries and call up six blocks and get off at – Elysian palm! (Williams, Scene One Line 16) This leaves Blanche puzzled and confused. The destination of where this streetcar leads is not exactly what Blanche would consider desirable. The interesting thing was that Stella lived in an area referred to Elysian field. The Greek meaning to this is “the happy otherworld for heroes elevate by the gods”.
